Why It Matters

How often should a fire shutter be tested?
Common practice is a service and drop test at least annually, with more frequent checks in high-use or high-risk premises. Your fire risk assessment should set the interval for your building.
What does a drop test involve?
The release mechanism is triggered under controlled conditions and the shutter is allowed to descend so we can confirm it closes fully, at the right speed, without binding. It's then reset and re-tested.
Can you reset a fire shutter that has activated?
Yes. Resetting needs to be done by someone who understands the mechanism — it isn't a case of simply winding it back up — and we re-test after resetting.
Do you provide certificates?
We provide written test and service reports covering what was tested and the outcome, which is what assessors and insurers normally want to see.
Can a damaged fire shutter be repaired or must it be replaced?
Depends on the damage. Curtains, guides and release gear are all repairable, but anything that compromises the fire rating means replacement, and we'll tell you plainly which applies.
Do you service fire shutters you didn't install?
Yes — the majority of the fire shutters we look after were installed by someone else.
