Choosing a Curtain

The Right Shutter
For Your Frontage.

A shop front shutter has two jobs that pull against each other: stop people getting in, and don't make the street look derelict. The curtain you pick decides which way that balance falls. Solid lath is the strongest and cheapest to maintain but blanks the window out completely. Punched lath keeps nearly all of that strength while letting light through a pattern of small holes. Perforated and grille curtains keep a lit display visible all night, which is why jewellers, phone shops and bakeries tend to use them.

We survey the frontage before quoting — the lintel, the reveal depth, whether there's room for an external box or whether it needs fitting behind the glass, and what your landlord or the council will actually allow on that parade.

Solid Lath

Maximum security and full privacy. The usual choice for takeaways, off-licences and units holding stock or cash overnight.

Punched Lath

A perforated pattern in a solid slat — close to solid strength, but light comes through and the frontage doesn't look boarded up.

Perforated & Grille

Open curtains that keep a lit window display visible after hours. Popular on high street retail and shopping parades.

Internal Fitting

Fitted behind the glazing so the shopfront looks unchanged from the street — often the only option in conservation areas.

New Shopfront Shutters

Surveyed at your unit, built to your opening in our Yorkshire warehouse, powder coated to your colour and fitted with the old shutter removed and taken away. Manual for smaller frontages, electric with key switch or remote for anything used through the day.

Retail Shutter Repairs

Jammed curtains, snapped springs, failed motors, bent bottom slats and seized guides — the usual causes of a shop that can't open in the morning. We repair any make, and we carry the common parts on the van.

Break-In Damage & Make Safe

Forced shutters made safe the same day so you can secure the unit, then repaired or replaced with the paperwork your insurer will ask for.

What type of shutter is best for a shop front?
It depends on whether you want people to see the window when you're closed. Solid lath is the strongest and gives full privacy, punched lath keeps most of that strength while letting light and a little visibility through, and perforated or grille curtains let passers-by see a lit display all night. Most high street retailers go punched or perforated; takeaways, off-licences and cash-handling premises usually go solid.
Can the shutter be fitted inside the window rather than outside?
Yes. Internal shutters sit behind the glazing so the shopfront looks unchanged from the street, which matters in conservation areas and on listed parades. They protect the display and deter entry, though an external shutter takes the hit before the glass does. We'll tell you honestly which suits your frontage when we survey.
Do I need planning permission for a shopfront shutter?
Often yes — many councils treat an external shutter as an alteration to the shopfront, and conservation areas and listed buildings almost always require consent. Internal or open-grille shutters are usually easier to get approved than solid external ones. Check with your local planning department before ordering; we can supply the specification and drawings you'll need.
How quickly can you repair a shopfront shutter?
Emergency callouts are the same day — an engineer is on the road within the hour and in most cases we can get the shutter safely open so you can trade, or safely closed so you can lock up. Where a part has to be manufactured we make it in our own Yorkshire warehouse rather than waiting on a supplier, and we make the frontage safe in the meantime.
Can you match the shutter to my shop's colours?
Yes. Curtains, guides and boxes can be powder coated to any RAL colour, so the shutter can match your fascia, your brand colours or a scheme the landlord or council has specified for the parade. Galvanised is the standard finish if colour isn't a concern.
Do you repair shutters you didn't install?
Always. Most of our shopfront work is on shutters fitted by someone else, often years ago and often by a company that's no longer around. We repair any make — motors, springs, bottom slats, guides, locks and barrels.
